Membership Information
Thank you for your interest in the Island Heights Yacht Club, a distinguished sailing and social club on the Barnegat Bay. Inquires about membership are always welcomed, as are new members.
Club History
The IHYC was incorporated in 1898 and it has a rich tradition of excellence in sailing competition and race management. (Click here for more information about our history.) We work to advance the sport of sailing while preserving the traditions of our club in an architecturally significant clubhouse located in a unique river-front community.
Volunteerism
Volunteerism is a key part of IHYC membership and there are many opportunities to become involved at the club. For more than five generations families have worked together to guide the club’s sailing and social activities, thereby promoting and strengthening sailing and life-long friendships. In addition to these activities, there are many committees that help operate the club and these always encourage the willing assistance of members.
Sailing Activities
The IHYC promotes member involvement with competitive and recreational sailing and boating, both as a participant and as a part of the race management committees that produce sailing events. The club is an active member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (here for more information about junior sailing.)
Social Activities
Members of the IHYC have enjoyed participating in a variety of social activities since its earliest days. From May to October, we have many things happening, including barbecues, beach parties, book club meetings, dances and, of course, many sailing regattas.(Click here to view the club’s event calendar.) There are also many activities for different groups. For example, all women are automatically members of the IHYC Ladies’ Auxiliary, which has its own officers and special activities like trips to NYC and cooking classes. There is also the Junior Association for young persons from 12 to 20. The Association also has its own officers and Juniors have their own room at the clubhouse in which they plan and engage in many social activities.
Another advantage of membership is the ability to make use of the historic clubhouse and convenient marina facilities. The clubhouse offers outstanding views of the Toms River, especially from its back deck and senior lounge and especially at sunset. There are also seasonal land storage and in-water slips available in our marina to members at very competitive rates.
Information about the club and its activities is provided to members through a regular newsletter, which is available by surface mail or e-mail and, of course, on the IHYC website. A useful handbook is also provided to all members each year.
